Pet Insurance Comparison: Spot vs. Trupanion?

January 7, 2020 by The Spot Pack
Spot vs Truparion

As you shop around for pet insurance, you’ll recognize many important areas in which Spot Pet Insurance compares against its competitors. Exam fees are part of every vet visit, so we decided to provide some insight to you about how Spot handles them compared to Trupanion.

Trupanion Doesn’t Cover Exam Fees

Trupanion doesn’t cover exam fees, even when your vet visit pertains to a covered condition.

WIth Spot coverage, exam fees related to conditions covered under your policy are eligible for reimbursement. This can really add up, as exams are a part of almost every veterinary visit (and bill!).

Trupanion Deductibles are Per Condition

With Trupanion, your coverage has a per-condition deductible. Each time your pet is diagnosed with a new condition, you’ll need to meet the deductible before you can get reimbursed for treatment.

With Spot, you can select a deductible of $100, $250, or $500. And you’ll only need to satisfy it once per 12-month policy period.

Trupanion’s Waiting Period is Longer

Trupanion’s illness coverage waiting period is 30 days. They consider any illness your pet experiences in that first month a pre-existing condition and it will not be eligible for coverage.

The waiting period for Spot plans is only 14 days. With any of Spot’s add-on preventive care,* your coverage starts the day after enrolling.

Trupanion Doesn’t Have Preventive Care Coverage

Preventive care provides an annual allotment that customers can be reimbursed for routine care like vaccines, bloodwork, flea and tick medications, and dental cleanings.

Trupanion does not offer preventative coverage options. Spot has two preventive care options that you can add to your base policy at a low monthly additional cost.

Trupanion Doesn’t Have Accident Only Plans

Accident-Only Plans cover injuries like breaks, toxin ingestion, bites, and wounds and are a good fit for active dogs, accident-prone dogs, and travel dogs. Since they do not include, illness and disease coverage, the premium prices are lower and can be a more affordable option.

Trupanion doesn’t offer an accident-only option. With Spot, you can choose either Accident & Illness coverage or Accident-Only coverage. If you go to generate a quote, you will be able to compare the premium prices for both options.

Alternative Therapies and Behavioral Conditions

With Trupanion, you can get coverage for these types of treatment as an add-on to your coverage.

Spot’s standard policies include coverage for alternative therapies like acupuncture and behavioral conditions like destructive chewing.

Limitations on Prescription Food

Trupanion offers coverage for prescription food, but for a maximum of two months, and only for up to 50% of the cost.

Spot covers prescription food, excluding foods for weight loss, without a separate reimbursement percentage or time limit.

Trupanion Doesn’t Give Multiple Pet Discounts

Trupanion doesn’t offer discounts for insuring more than one pet. Spot gives you a 10% discount for each additional pet that you insure.**
