Coyotes

These smaller cousins of wolves have become a major threat to our pet friends, dogs, and cats in recent times. Though its primary preys are deer and rabbits, they attack dogs out of pure aggression and not for defense. Their population has been increasing in North America. Parasites

In Connecticut, our pets are at risk of getting parasites including fleas, ticks, mites, and worms. You should regularly check your pet for signs of parasite infections to help maintain the health of your pet. Check your pets for signs of ticks when they come inside and consider getting your pets vaccinated against certain infections. Although these are just some preventive measures you can take, your pet is still at risk from getting a parasite. Some signs to be aware of in your pet can include excessive scratching, irritation or inflammation of joints, fever, lethargy, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, and vomiting. If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms, you should consult your vet immediately.

WAITING PERIODS

There is a 14-day waiting period for coverage. The waiting period begins on the first effective date of the applicable coverage. Any condition that occurs during an applicable waiting period is a pre-existing condition and is not eligible for coverage.

There is no waiting period for preventive care coverage if you choose to add it to your plan. Find more information on preventative care coverage here.

PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS

Illness, disease, injury, or change to your pet’s health that first occurs or shows symptoms before coverage is effective or during a waiting period. This includes conditions that are related to, secondary, or resultant from a pre-existing condition.  Pet Insurance plans provided by Spot do not cover pre-existing conditions.

Visit our dog insurance and cat insurance pages for more information about plans.

How can I make my vet visits less expensive?

There are some options you can explore to find less expensive vet care, like looking for cheaper alternatives of prescriptions or comparing different vets, but one of the best methods is getting your pet insured. This way, you can rest easier knowing you have coverage for the unexpected. Also, by taking your pet to the vet for routine preventive care, you can help protect them against future conditions. Spot plans offer preventive care coverage at an additional cost to your plan.

Why doesn’t pet insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Plans provided by Spot do not cover pre-existing conditions.

A pre-existing condition is any injury or illness which occurs or shows symptoms before coverage starts or during a waiting period. A condition is considered pre-existing whether or not it’s been officially diagnosed or treated; all that matters is when it occurred or symptoms first displayed.

However, with plans provided by Spot, this doesn’t mean the condition can’t be covered in the future if the condition is curable. An injury or illness that is curable, cured, and free of treatment and symptoms for 180 days will no longer be regarded as pre-existing, with the exception of knee and ligament conditions. If a knee or ligament condition occurs before the coverage effective date or during a waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered.
