What are the Origins of the Red Nose Pitbull?

The American Pitbull Terrier originated in England in the 19th century. Bully breeds were developed here to control unruly bulls and livestock. Bull baiting was a cruel bloodsport that these dogs were often bred to participate in back then. By the middle of the 19th century, bull baiting was banned. As a result, dog fighting became a popular, albeit illegal, betting sport, and because it was more difficult to enforce the law, it flourished.

In order to harness the fighting strength and aggressive nature of bully breeds, more breeds were developed. During this time, the American Pitbull Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier were considered the same breed. It is said that the American Kennel Club wanted to distance its dogs from their fighting reputation in the 1930s.

As companion animals, they wanted to develop their strengths. AKC's official status was granted to the Staffordshire Terrier at this point but not to the American Pitbull Terrier. In 1972, the AKC renamed the Staffordshire Terrier as the American Staffordshire Terrier. Breed standards became much more specific at that time.

American Pitbull Terriers have never been recognized by the American Kennel Club as an official breed. Nevertheless, the United Kennel Club (UKC) and Continental Kennel Club (CKC) recognize it.

What are the Risks for the Red Nose Pitbull Dog Breed?

Like all breeds, Red Nose Pitbull’s are at risk of developing health issues over their lifetimes. Pitbulls with red noses are not more or less likely to suffer from health problems than Pitbulls with other colors. It is sometimes recognized that they can have sensitive skin, but getting a shampoo formulated for their coat can help.

As a purebred Pitbull, Red Nose Pitbull’s do not have any additional nutritional requirements. As your pup gets older, you'll need the right food for a Pitbull.
