6 Non Shedding Cat

Allergies are never fun. While many of us have allergies to certain foods or pollen, we can also be allergic to our furry friends. If you’re a cat lover but you’re allergic to cats, you’ve come to the right place!

We’re breaking down whether cats can be truly hypoallergenic and sharing recommendations on the best cats for allergies: a selection of non-shedding cat breeds.

Can Cats Truly Be Hypoallergenic?

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic cat or dog. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, people with pet allergies are overly sensitive to benign proteins in saliva, urine, or dead skin cells (dander). This sensitivity causes an allergic reaction.

Cat allergies are widespread, especially if you already have asthma or other allergies. Three out of ten people in the United States are allergic to cats and dogs, with cats being twice as likely to cause an allergic reaction.

Even non-shedding cat breeds can cause allergic reactions, though this can often be managed with frequent grooming and regular cleaning. While having no pets around is considered the best choice if you have pet allergies, it’s completely understandable that you want to have an adorable furry friend around!

Here are a few suggestions from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America to decrease pet allergen exposure:

  • Keep your pet out of your bedroom and clean your bedding thoroughly. You spend a lot of your life sleeping, so give yourself a safe, clean place to rest.

  • Vacuum frequently – look for a certified asthma & allergy-friendly filter if possible.

  • Wear a dust mask while vacuuming and cleaning.

  • Have someone else regularly brush and bathe your pet to reduce dander.
