5 Signs Your Cat is Happy

Certain cat behaviors are telltale signs of their physical and emotional health. As a cat parent, you probably feel confident that your feline friend is happy and content. But do you really know for sure? Do we ever misinterpret our cat’s behaviors?

Here are 5 signs that your cat is truly living the good life:

1. A healthy appetite

A happy cat will let you know when she or he is hungry by meowing or rubbing your leg and leading you to their bowl. Cats who eat a regular, healthy diet are generally considered happy. A normal appetite is also a sign of good physical health. If your cat’s appetite changes suddenly or your cat stops eating altogether, it’s definitely an indicator that something’s wrong and you should call your vet right away.

2. Meow if you’re happy!

Vocal clues can tell you a lot about your cat’s emotional health. When cats are happy, they can be very vocal and even engage in conversations with you. Generally, a meow that is high-pitched indicates that a cat is content while a low, growling meow may indicate that your cat is upset or angry. Purring can mean a few different things, but usually, it means your cat is comfortable and extremely happy.

3. Playfulness

If your cat is playful, that’s always a good sign. So many of our feline friends are truly funny cats and they exhibit LOL-behaviors on the regular. These playful cat behaviors are a good sign that your pet is engaged and loving life.

4. A healthy appearance

A happy cat keeps itself clean and well-groomed. A healthy cat should have a shiny, smooth coat. Our cats normally spend as much as 15-50% of their time grooming themselves. If you notice that your favorite feline isn’t keeping up his appearance, you should consider calling your vet.

5. Sleeping beauty

If it seems like your cat sleeps all the time, you’re probably right. On average, cats sleep about 15 hours a day, however, cats have been known to sleep as much as 20 hours a day. If your cat is comfortable sleeping almost anywhere, that’s a good sign. A happy cat will curl up for a nap with little to no concern as to where or when.

A happy cat is a healthy cat. Regular checkups and vaccinations are essential to your cat’s livelihood and will potentially increase their lifespan. Pet insurance is a great way to help make sure your cat gets the care they need without costing you a fortune, so you can always focus on the happy, sleepy, days.
